Red-billed Leiothrix

The Red-billed Leiothrix (Leiothrix lutea) is a small passerine bird native to southern China, the Himalayan foothills, and parts of Southeast Asia, including Vietnam and Myanmar. In Japan, it has become established as an introduced species. Despite its vivid subtropical coloration—marked by a red bill, a bright yellow throat, and crimson accents on the wings—the bird remains discreet, moving quietly through the shadows of the forest floor.
This species strongly avoids open spaces and overhead exposure, spending most of its time within dense undergrowth or the lower layers of vegetation close to the ground. It favors dark, humid environments such as woodland ravines and forests with thick ground cover. Even when visiting water sources for bathing or foraging, it appears only briefly, often completing these activities in mere moments. Its way of life, shaped by limited light and constant cover, stands in quiet contrast to its striking appearance, revealing a temperament that is notably reserved and cautious.
