The Black-naped Monarch (Hypothymis azurea) is a small bird of the family Monarchidae that inhabits forests across Southeast and East Asia. Measuring approximately 16–18 cm in length, it feeds primarily on insects, which it captures in flight using agile sallying (flycatching) techniques. Its song consists of repeated four-note sequences sounding like “Fe~ Fe~ Fe~ Fe~.”
The species builds cup-shaped nests in Y-shaped branch junctions, using grass, twigs, and moss, reinforced with spider silk. Both sexes cooperate in raising the young, while foraging skillfully in the forest. Observing its foraging and breeding behavior offers a glimpse into its intricate forest life.
