The Black Kite (Milvus migrans) is a medium-sized raptor of the family Accipitridae, measuring approximately 55–60 cm in length. Its long, broad wings form a distinctive V-shape in flight. Males and females are similar in appearance, with overall brown plumage and darker wing tips.
Adaptable to a wide range of habitats from plains to mountains, it is often seen soaring over urban areas and agricultural landscapes. The species is omnivorous, feeding on small animals, insects, and occasionally human refuse. It uses its sharp talons and beak to catch prey, and sometimes gathers in loose flocks.
Adults are resident throughout Japan, representing one of the most familiar raptors that coexist closely with human settlements and rural landscapes.
