On the day when the first snowfall of 2025 was recorded on Mount Asama (early November), the view from the west peak of Ko-Asama revealed a landscape dressed in a striking two-tone contrast. The golden larch forests covering the slopes and the thin layer of fresh snow tracing the upper ridges formed a vivid interplay of colors, quietly marking the boundary between late autumn and the onset of early winter. The mountain profile stands in a complementary relationship to the view from the Nagano side.
The ascent to Ko-Asama’s summit is modest—about 30 to 40 minutes one way with roughly 250 meters of elevation gain—making it accessible to hikers of all ages and fitness levels.
As the gentle trail climbs and the view gradually opens, the presence of Mount Asama grows more imposing. With some luck, you may encounter a Japanese serow inhabiting the area, adding a moment of unexpected richness to this short yet rewarding mountain walk.
