Shifen Waterfall (Shifen Falls, Chinese: 十分瀑布, pronounced jūfùn bakufu in Japanese) is located in Pingxi District, New Taipei City, Taiwan. It boasts a width of about 40 meters and a height of roughly 20 meters.
The surrounding rock formations were shaped over long periods by tectonic movements and erosion, with the water carving a V-shaped gorge that gave rise to today’s scenery. The waterfall itself is a fan-shaped cascade, noted less for its vertical drop than for its width and the sheer volume of water. The falling water generates mist that drifts through the area, sometimes enveloping visitors depending on the wind.
It attracts people year-round, but during the rainy season the flow intensifies, with thunderous roars and spray reaching far into the distance. In the dry season, the flow subsides, revealing the contours of the terrain more clearly.
With its flowing waters, Shifen Waterfall quietly tells the story of Taiwan’s natural history and geological formation.
