Mt. Nabewari (1,332 m) belongs to the Akagi mountain range in Gunma Prefecture.
Situated along the rim of Akagi’s vast caldera, it offers open, panoramic views that are a key attraction for hikers.
There are several approaches, but the route via Arayama Plateau is especially popular, as it allows hikers to enjoy seasonal scenery—fresh greenery in spring, brilliant autumn foliage, and rime ice in winter. The ridgeline is gentle, and as one ascends, a pleasant breeze flows across, easing the fatigue of the climb. From the summit, the cityscapes of Maebashi and Takasaki come into view, along with distant peaks such as Mt. Asama and even Mt. Fuji on clear days.
Along the trails of Nabewari, clusters of zumi (Malus sieboldii) can be found. A deciduous tree of the rose family, it blossoms in white and pale pink in spring and bears small red fruit in autumn. With their tart flavor, these fruits—long known as “sanmi,” or “sour fruit”—have provided an important food source for birds. The sight of the bright red fruits coloring the slopes alongside autumn foliage is a seasonal spectacle unique to Nabewari.
In winter, the mountain is adorned with rime ice, offering a hushed, snow-clad beauty. Proper gear is required in snowy and icy conditions, but the climb remains relatively approachable while still allowing for a full-fledged alpine experience. Beloved year-round, Mt. Nabewari continues to captivate hikers with its seasonal charm.
