The Taiwan Barbet is a medium-sized woodpecker species endemic to Taiwan, found mainly in low mountain broadleaf forests, parks, and orchards, and increasingly in urban green spaces. Measuring about 20–22 cm, it has vivid green plumage with a colorful head marked in blue, yellow, red, and black—giving it its name, “Five-colored Bird.” Its stout bill is well-suited for eating fruit.
Its call is a repetitive, low “pop-pop-pop,” reminiscent of a wooden fish drum, earning it the local nickname “Flower Monk.” While primarily frugivorous, it also takes insects during the breeding season.
Once scarce in cities, it has become more common thanks to urban greening and growing public awareness, now serving as a beloved symbol of Taiwan’s unique wildlife.
