Read in English — ✴︎ Mizusawa Kannon | Late Winter on Mt. Mizusawa
Mt. Mizusawa, standing at 1,194 meters, is located in Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture.
Positioned at the eastern edge of the Haruna mountain group, it has long been revered as a sacred peak. At its base lies Mizusawa Kannon, a temple with a history spanning some 1,300 years, while to the north sits the famous Ikaho Onsen with its stone steps. The temple grounds, centered on the unique hexagonal main hall, remain a pilgrimage site that continues to draw worshippers from across Japan and abroad.
The ascent demands determination, with steep trails historically used as paths of spiritual discipline. Along these slopes—where attachments are said to burn away and selflessness drifts near—pilgrims and hikers can often be seen climbing in quiet reflection.
Around the halfway point, near the “Resting Stone,” wild birds such as the Varied Tit (Yamagara) appear. Their delicate presence offers comfort to weary bodies and hearts, adding a note of gentleness to the climb toward the summit.
Moss-covered rocks, rows of cedars, and forests wrapped in snow murmur with a wintry stillness. Within that silence, the sound of footsteps and the toll of temple bells weave into the landscape.
“Entrusted prayers, pure of heart—
at Mizusawa they are received,
and joy is found in their fulfillment.”
(Temple hymn, modern translation)
Just as pure water carries wishes onward, the steps upon Mt. Mizusawa cleanse the spirit, granting renewed strength to walk forward into tomorrow.
