Mt. Hachigatake Standing at the Mikunizakai

The Mikunizakai Pass (2,751 m) marks the exact point where the three prefectures of Nagano, Toyama, and Niigata converge. It serves as a natural watershed along the ridge extending from Mt. Hakuba, a crucial junction connecting three directions — south toward Mt. Hakuba, north toward Mt. Hachigatake, Mt. Yukikura, and Mt. Asahi, and east toward Mt. Korenge and Hakuba-Oike Pond.It is distant from any trailhead, requiring roughly seven to eight hours of hiking one way.
As autumn deepens, the remnants of alpine life that have endured the short mountain summer take on hues of crimson and amber. The gentle sway of the autumn grass adds delicate tones to the rocky slopes, creating a scene both fragile and vibrant.
In this mingling of awe and stillness, a faint atmosphere seems to blur the boundary between the living world and the beyond — leaving upon the mountain a solemn warmth that quietly lingers in the air.
